Easyglide zippers allround the construction make opening and closing fast and smooth. The main camera compartment features a flexible divider system that lets one quickly and comfortably access a DSLR. A built-in microfiber cleaning cloth is conveniently positioned at the side and tucks away into a stretch mesh pocket and out of the way of the camera. The next-generation SlingShot™ AW includes a Hideaway Tripod Mount™ scheme with foldout holder and quick-release buckle with strap to secure a compact tripod or monopod to the side. It’s definitely quite limited in what it can carry….but it does work for me in some situations. It *does* hold my Canon 40D with Tamron 18-270mm super-zoom attached along with my 540EX flash and a extra 50mm lens, so would be a reasonable bag for me to use on trips when I am not able to bring a selection of lenses with me. I am not a person that can carry much equipment with me in the field due to physical problems, so I really need a bag that is comfortable and can handle at least this amount of equipment. I do wish the interior dividers and velcro had a few more optional placements, you’re pretty restricted in how they can be placed.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful.
It’s a nice camera bag–if it’s large enough for your camera and gear
By B. Wilson
The LowePro Slingshot 102AW camera bag seems well constructed and very durable. It has one curved, padded shoulder strap so that you can carry it over your left shoulder. There is also a small nylon hand strap at the top of the bag for carrying the bag, but it is 1″ in width and is not padded. There are a number of pockets and compartments for carrying an array of items. You can also carry a tripod or mono-pod on the side of the bag.

The main issue may be whether the bag is large enough from your camera and gear. The main compartment has three subdividers that are held in place by velcro so that you can adjust the size of the subcompartments or remove the subdividers completely. The size of the main compartment is approximately 10″ wide, by 7″ (which would be the maximum distance from the back of your camera to the front end of your lense), to about 5″ in height at most (which would be the maximum height of a single lense standing up in one of the subcompartments. The flap for the main compartment has two small pockets for memory cards. There is a secondary compartment at the top of the bag that is 7″ wide at the bottom and narrows to 4 at the top, and about 4″ deep. There are a couple other smaller compartments on the bag also. And then within the compartments are smaller storage pockets.

The only thing that I didn’t care much for was a strap that crosses the zipper of the cover to the main compartment that has two Travato side release buckles. If you secure the strap with the 2 buckles, then you have to release the buckles to unzip the cover. Then when you want to zip the compartment up again, the buckles tend to fall across the zipper and you have to pick them up to zip the bag up.

Asimo (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) is a two-legged humanoid robot that stands at 130 centimeters and weighs 54 kilograms. Asimo resembles an astronaut who wears a backpack. He may walk or run at speeds up to 4.3 mph on it is two feet.

This humanoid robot was produced by the engineers of Honda Motors, a company that is known as a producer of cars and power supplies. They begun developing helper robots in 1986. Their imagination is to develop a robot that may without apparent effort move around or inside the house, and that means they have to perfective the walking technology of their project. Honda engineers started their primary try with the use of boxes with legs. After the walking mechanism has been developed, they had added the head, arms and hands.

After all the hard work, Honda engineers developed a new engineering that produced a walking robot, and named it Asimo. Asimo is using a PowerPC that controls all the 26 joints. He may be controlled using a workstation or by way of remote control. He is powered by little but powerful servo motors that have a rotating shaft which may move the limbs or surfaces to an angle as commanded by the use of a controller. In addition, Honda engineers had formulated a 3D CPU that will give Asimo more computing power.

Asimo has numerous features that enables him to interact better with the people, here are a heap of of them:

(a) Asimo may recognize moving objects- with the use of visual data captured by his camera that is attached to his head, he may recognize the movements of an object, the direction were it going and the distance it travels. Other apps that are included in this feature is the capacity to follow a person, follow his/her movements or greet them when he or she approaches him.

(b) Asimo may recognize gestures and postures – because Asimo may interpret the motion and position of the humane hand, Asimo may react accordingly to the natural movements of people. An example of this is when a person offers a handshake or give a wave, he will then respond to them by accepting the handshake or wave back to them. In addition to that, he may also recognize given directions like pointing to a specific place.

(c) Asimo may likewise recognize it is surroundings and act in a safe way for him and to humans. An example of this is that he may recognize potential hazards like stairs and stay clear from humans being hit or bump by him.

(d) Asimo may distinguish sounds – he may distinguish voices and other sounds and distinguish the source of it. He may discern the person that is talking and responds to the humans name and face. Also, he may respond to dissimilar questions as he may either nod for yes or shake his head for no and may even speak out with a verbal answer.

As of year 2007, there are already 46 Asimo units being collected by Honda engineers. Each of these units is available to for hire for $166,000 a year and cost less than $1,000,000 to manufacture.

Very durable and very comfy. This bag fits everything I need to travel. My huge 17″ screen laptop, my camera with battery grip and 18-200 lens attached, two spare lenses, all my chargers and cables, and even has enough space for a pair of yoga pants, flip flops and my makeup bag.

It comfortably fits my 14in laptop, nikon dslr and zoom lense. It also has a decent size compartment for daytrip items (ie light jacket, books, brown lunch bag and other personal items) and a smaller compartment with various organizational pockets and a waterproof (I think) pocket for passports and keys. The camera section does open slightly awkward; however, since I typically have my camera out well before picture time, I don’t have a problem the slightly cumbersome camera zippers. Overall, I am very satisfied and would recommend it to people who use it for day trips and such (even shortterm travel since it also fits a laptop).

Meanwhile, the Monochrome feature offers three single-toned effects: Blue, Black and White and Sepia. These color effects will make each picture that you take look distinguishable and more sophisticated.

Gebauer
I’m a DSLR photographer who shoots professionally and has managed a camera store in the past. I wanted something I can take with me everywhere but still produces good quality shots. I also wanted a camera that could shoot good looking videos. I researched several models and after much deliberation decided on the Canon 300 HS. I’m very happy I did.

214 of 215 people found the following review helpful.
Awesome Point and Shoot
By Keith Corbin
This is a point and shoot class camera, if you understand that going in, you are going to be more than impressed with it. I’m going from an SD630 and hands down, this beats it. I even had an SX210IS and these images are on par with it, if not better. I had to return my SX210IS as it had issues with dust on the image sensor and I’ve been waiting for a new P&S class to come out. I bit the bullet on this, well, the black version Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS 12 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Black) and what can I say – I am happy!

300HS vs 500HS:
There is a 500HS version of the camera, which is approx $50 more. To this point, the only differences I can tell are the LCD on the back as well as aperture priority and shutter priority, while the 300hs does not. The touch screen on the 500hs can also be used to focus on a particular subject. The 500hs also has a wider aperture at 2.0, the 300hs has 2.7.

Form Factor/Display:
Small. Awesome. There is a texture on the camera, I really like this as it seems like it will help if you hands are wet (sweat, snow, etc). Easy to operate one hand and if using both hands, flash isn’t in a horrible place. Display is very bright and button seem intuitive as with other Canon cameras. Battery and SD are on the bottom door, USB and HDMI are in a covered side port. Comes with a wrist strap if you desire a little extra security.

Boot Time/Software:
Camera is ready to take photos very fast. From the time you press the button, it’s pretty much set to catch the action. Time between photos wasn’t terrible (about 1.5 seconds) and if you need it, there is continuous shot mode. Had no problem with the Canon software on Windows 7. I’ve used the Canon Photo Window import for a while, does a good job of getting photos off the camera without duplicates. I use Picasa to then manage my photo library (I skip the Zoom Browser, but it’s really not bad if you want to use it, I’m just a slave to Google/gmail)

Computer Connectivity:
I didn’t find this anywhere in the specs, so if you’re looking, the camera uses mini-USB, similar to all Canon’s that have come out over the last few years.

Optical Zoom:
You’re going to be impressed with the form factor of this camera and it’s 5x OPTICAL zoom. I immediately disabled digital zoom as 12.1MP + 5x Optical will get you very close to the action. You’re better off digitally enhancing the photos later on.

Battery + Memory Card:
This uses the NBL-4 (again, I found confusion on this and accessories) – so if you have some of those laying around keep them as they’ll work just fine in this camera. This is nice as my SD630 uses the NBL-4 so now I have 2 chargers + 3 batteries. It took my 32GB SDHC without any issues and holds thousands of images. Images have tended to be between 2 and 3mb on the highest settings.

Image Quality:
Look, I’m no photo fanatic, I don’t expect the people buying this camera are. I am looking for solid images and this camera delivers. There are a ton a feature you can delve into and I’m sure they are good. It has manual mode, so if you fancy that, you can go down that path. But I’m the type of person that knows when something looks good, OK or great. This camera consistently delivers GREAT photos. I’m happy with the low light and images aren’t blurry or grainy (within reasonable expectations).

Video:
FINALLY! Optical zoom on a Canon during video! 1080p brings this camera up to par with others in its class and it does a decent job. I didn’t notice any major noise when zooming in and out while recording video. I know this is the excuse Canon has used in the past as to why they never had this feature. It shoots nice clips for those quick moments. This will NOT replace a true DV cam, but hey, for a few minute clips here and there, you will simply not be dissapointed.

75 of 78 people found the following review helpful.
Video shaking zooming in at around 3.8x and 4.8x
By T. Wang
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3V1PPASFHWS79 I liked this camera very much especially the low light photo quality and 24mm ultra wide-angel lens until I received my Sandisk Extreme Pro 32gb memory card and started to play with the video functions of the camera. I found that when I was zooming in from 1x, the video was very smooth until it hited around 3.8x, it was shaking twice, and when I continued to zoom in to around 4.8x, it shaking once a little more, no matter what resolutions I used (1280, 1920, 640). Please take a look at the video. I zoomed in all the way from 1x to 5x, and zoomed out and in several times between 3x and 5x. Zooming out was no shaking at all, but zooming in was shaking at around 3.8x and 4.8x. Does anybody have this kind of problem? I don’t know if I got a defective one or it is normal. Please let me know and appreciate any comment. Thanks!!

[Update (4/23/2011)]: Finally I returned it because I thought it is defective and just received the replacement one this afternoon. The only difference I noticed at first is the returned one is “Made in Japan”, and the new one is “Made in China”. I tried to record video by zooming-in with the new camera and very happy to find out the video got perfect zooming-in without any shaking. But later I played that video file on my computer, and heard some very loud knocking sounds when the zooming-in almost reaching to the end (5x). I tried several times and the results were the same. I listened very carefully when I recorded video by zooming-in the camera, and found out the knocking sounds came from the lens’ motor. That didn’t happan with the returned camera!! I think Canon must have some quality assurance problems. I bought this camera to replace my two and half years old Creative Labs Vado HD 720p Pocket Video Camcorder that only has poor digital zoom function, so I wanted to use this camera to record video mostly and expected much from its 5x optical zoom. I don’t know if I would return this replacement one too.

[Update (4/25/2011)]: Found another person has the similar problem – clicking noise when zooming-in during video mode. Because Amazon doesn’t allow to post the link directly. Please go to YouTube and put “Unboxing Canon Elph 300 HS” in the Search field. Go to the movie page posted by “whynot7891″, and see the comments just below that movie.

[Updated (5/2/2011)]: Finally I returned my replacement camera. Before I did that, I went the local BestBuy, and bought another one that is made in Japan. I was happy to find out that one is free of problems. Though I still can hear the lens noise when zooming, but it is hardly audible. I am glad I didn’t give up, because I really love this camera. It is very compact, fast to function, and creates great picture and video even in low light. I particularly love its 24mm wide and 5x lens. I would like to give it a 4 and a half stars if I can. Good luck to get your one!

[Updated (10/4/2011)]: For your information, there is a new model coming out – Canon PowerShot ELPH 310 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with Full 1080p HD Video (Silver). Price is $60 more as today, with same 12.1 MP, same DIGIC 4 processor, but higher 8x Optical Zoom (a plus), larger 3″ LCD display (another plus), narrower 28mm lens (a minus), and with more body color options (no black though).

Manufacturer Description This innovative backpack was designed for the SLR photographer with a big digital or film SLR (such as Canon’s EOS 1D series or Nikon’s D2 series) with a grip and lens attached, assorted lenses, a flash, and accessories. The Adventure 7 features a youthful, modern, and sleek design that, for security, does not look like a camera bag. In this unambiguously designed backpack, the lower division is a exclusively foam-padded camera bag compartment, while the upper section functions like a established backpack to hold a light jacket, lunch, or other personal items necessitated on your next photo adventure.
  Memory and Battery Management System
Many of our camera bags feature the patented Memory and Battery Management System, which provides quick access to memory cards, batteries, and accessories. This distinctive scheme uses red flags to tell apart available memory cards and batteries from ones that are used up.

  Strap Accessory System (S.A.S.)
Tamrac’s Strap Accessory System has parts that attach to the shoulder straps of most of our camera bags and backpacks to grant photographers to personalize and custommake their carrying systems.

It has two distinct areas: one well padded area for photo gear, the other unpadded for things like sweaters, etc.

The camera compartment is not huge, but it will accommodate most peoples digital SLR, mid-range zoom, telephoto zoom and flash, and a few other modest size accessories. It’s not a very good bag for a gadget freak you can’t decide what to take, so takes everything.

The top compartment serves two useful functions. It gives us a nice, somewhat roomy area for carrying odds and ends; and it extends the bag length so that it fits comfortably on the back. This design is also much lighter than most backback designs, which makes it more suited to those such as myself who don’t like to lug tons on my back.

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful.
Perfect of a smaller person or for a day trip
By H. Hess
For those of you wanting to lug around all of your gear – then this bag is not for you.

I on the otherhand don’t have a lot (canon 20d, 70-200 lens, 18-55 lens, flash and charger. I can fit all of my stuff in here fine. And if I know I don’t want to carry all of my stuff – great.

The top is actually bigger than what I thought. For now, I leave my 70-200 lens attached to the camera and put it in the top part. ANd I put my wallet and keys down below instead. This is only because I don’t have a smaller zoom lens yet that I want to leave attached which will then store the camera in the bottom section as well as the 70-200 lens in the bottom section. I on’y do this because that’s the lens I always use and don’t want to attach and detatch on account of dust. So – there you have it. It’s not HUGE and it really does hold alot.

There are mesh compartments on the side that do hold water bottles. There are mesh compartments in the top that hold my wallet/pda and keys and sunglasses.

The bottom has rigid compartment barriers which I like but it’s all about your taste.

Bottom line – if you don’t have 200 dollars to sink into a bag – then this is a great bag. I wanted a bag that I could afford so I could spend more money on a better lens.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful.
Love the Bottom… The Top is a Little Snug
By Super Mum
I hope this review helps those who are debating whether to purchase this backpack. Here is what I have in the lower portion of my bag right now (which is all my equipment) compare the dimensions provided to what you own:

- Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera (Black Body Only) (which is attached to:)

- Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras According to Sigma’s website: Diameter 76.6mm X Length 122mm (3.0 in. X 4.8 in)

- Tamron Autofocus 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Canon SLR Cameras (off the camera) According to Tamron’s website: Diameter x Length = ø73mm x 92mm (2.9 in x 3.6 in)

- Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens (off the camera) Dimensions (Diameter x Length)=	41.0mm x 68.2 (1.6″ x 2.7″)

- In the last two bottom compartments (which could hold lenses instead of what I carry) I have:
– Four 67mm colored filters each in their own HUGE hard plastic protectors
– One camera cap
– One back lens cap (for the attached Sigma)
– One pocket guide for the Canon XTI (very tiny)
– One 67 to 52mm step ring in flexible plastic

How does it fit? Very well. I have NOT manipulated the dividers and they are in their original place. I have room to stack another short lens on top of the Canon 50mm if I ever buy another short lens. It is important to note that the Sigma 70-300 attached to the XTI is a smidge too tall and pushes lightly into the top compartment space (which is separated by material filled with what I guess to be foam padding).

Now I guess it is time for my complaints…
I am a huge fan of the BIG purse movement. I LOVE room for all my personal belongings. I love being able to carry EVERYTHING with me. In my purses I am able to hold a hoodie, six chapsticks, several lip glosses, a few games, checkbook, oversized wallet, snacks, calendar, Tylenol, water bottle, hand wipes, cell phone, two pairs of sunglasses, breath mints, pens, coin purse… oh I am sure I am forgetting things. Nevertheless, I assumed a backpack would be able to fit at LEAST this in the upper portion. I was wrong. I knew the dimensions before buying and tried to simulate the size at home. I figured I would have to cut back on my “essentials” but I didn’t realize how much. My compromise? The hoodie will be slipped through the belt buckle and tied in place and I will have to learn to live with a little less when I travel with this backpack.

So with the upper size constraints, why did I buy this pack?

Obviously, (from my purse contents) I needed a daypack. The Tamrac differentiated itself from others in several ways. It was necessary for me to have the water bottle pockets. Cold and wet water bottles do not mix with electronics (cell phones, cameras, etc.) and paper (checkbooks, calendar, etc.) and the mesh outer pockets became a deciding factor. This ruled out the Lowepro Orion Trekker II Camera Backpack (Black). The Tamrac Adventure 9 Photo/Computer Backpack (Grey/Black)was another contender (because of the slightly larger size) but I hated the idea of extra weight due to the notebook pocket I would never use. Additionally, I did not like the way the bottom portion of the Adventure 9 opened. From the photos it seemed like a security risk and had the potential to spill out on to the sidewalk. (Though I could be wrong)

Hope this helps!

It was a worst-case scenario for Specialist Five Doug “Dusty” Rhodes one bloody day in Vietnam. Vietcong snipers were targeting Rhodes and two fellow soldiers, one of whom was standing on a land mine while the other was attempting to place a pin in the device to keep it from exploding. Rhodes, who was later awarded a Bronze Star for heroism, ran to an open area and drew fire while the device was disarmed; and all three men escaped.

Fast forward more than three decades. Today’s soldiers in places like Afghanistan and Iraq are no less heroic, but the twenty-first-century EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) gimmicks they have on their side do the dual duties of both drawing fire and disarming explosive devices-all without exposing persons to the dangers they so routinely handle.

No doubt with regards to it: “Robots in Iraq save lives,” says Sgt. First Class Jeff Sarver, who has trained with and deployed EOD robots in Iraq, Bosnia, Korea and the U.S.

“The most impressive thing I’ve seen a robot do was to unzip a suicide vest off a suicide bomber and then take the vest off,” recounts Sarver, stationed at Fort McCoy (Wisconsin) and not long back returned from service abroad. He describes the kind of multitasking “buddy” that will take the bullet for you, each time— and diffuse a bomb with one (mechanical) arm tied behind it is back, so to speak.

WHAT THEY CAN DO

Robot names are exotic: PackBot, ANDROS, Vanguard, ODIS, SWORDS, TALON. But they’re all business. This robotic corps may wade through a foot of sewer water, climb stairs and over rubble, find and defuse old ordnance, distinguish a “false exhaust” in the undercarriage of a terrorist’s car. They may ferret out and neutralize biohazards, radiation and explosive gimmicks concealed in buildings, holes in the ground, wet concrete, even in a pile of corpses.

Here’s a rundown of the capablenesses of numerous of the robotic EOD gadgets presently in use by U.S. armed forces in military hotspots overseas. (Of course, galore capablenesses overlap, but this listing will demonstrate the unbelievable skillfulness of our robotic EOD corps as a whole.)

PackBot, fictitious by iRobot, weighs less than 24 kilograms, and once offloaded from it is backpack may be deployed in less than two minutes. It may worm it is way into sewers and other dangerous and constricted spaces covered with anything from slick tile to gooey mud. With eight interchangeable payload modules, it senses chemical and biological hazards, detects mines, deploys GPR (ground penetrating radar) and reaches as far as two meters in any direction while supplying eyes and ears for it is remote operators.

The ANDROS line of robots fictitious by REMOTEC (a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman) is as versatile as a circus family. The Mark V-A1, a heavy-duty vehicle with a distinctive articulated track, may climb 45 degree stairs and plow over obstacles as high as 24 inches. It has a manipulator arm, gripper, TV cameras and audio, and lights. Its littler brothers, the F6A and the Mini-ANDROS II, are scaled-down models that may get through tighter spaces like airplane aisles and grant quick tool change-outs while still tackling tough terrains. The largest, strongest, wheeled ANDROS is the Wolverine, an environmentally-sealed unit that may operate in high temperatures and humidity to facilitate both remote watching and delicate manipulation tasks. Finally, over 500 ANDROS Wheelbarrow units deployed in 40 countries have the capacity to alter center of gravity, neutralize landmines and carry tools like disruptors and instrumentation to detect explosive and chemical dangers. All the ANDROS vehicles may be controlled from a distance thru radio control, fiber optic cable reel, or portable cable reel. Typical price for an ANDROS: $80,000-plus each.

Vanguard(TM) robots such as the MKII may slip beneath the bumper of a distrustful vehicle to inspect for the full range of CBRNE – chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive –threats. It may fit in the trunk of a police car or deploy from a military air drop. Its laptop computer-based command control unit responds to keystroke or joystick and the robot boasts an articulated arm, Proparms disrupters, and night surveillance cameras. It may convert from tracks to wheels in a matter of minutes.

ODIS (Omni-Directional Inspection System), devised by the U.S. Tank-Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), is a robot system for detecting explosive devices. Described as “a hovercraft on wheels,” it may move forward, backwards, right or left and rotate it is camera and lights separately or in combination. Even operators with minimal training can, with ODIS’s help, distinguish out-of-place wires or untrue exhaust pipes under a distrustful vehicle. To protect versus suicide bombers, a camera mast system allows inspection from a distance and communicates with a “palm-computer based translator system” to let ODIS interact with personnel to verify identifications and relay instructions to vehicle drivers.

TALON (TM) robots (developed by Foster-Miller) offer cutting-edge sensing capacity for chemical, gas, radiation, and heat with readings that may be accessed simultaneously, remotely and in real time by means of a single integrated hand-held display (think multiple windows.) The transmitting unit sniffs out everything from gamma radiation to pepper spray and may measure 50 kinds of gas. The robot itself is man-portable and it is unmatched speed may pace a running soldier. It may plow through snow and surf and isn’t daunted by concertina wire or rock piles. TALON robots have finished more than 20,000 EOD missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

SMWS (Small Mobile Weapons System) TALON robots carry mounts for everything from shotguns, Barrett 50-caliber rifles and M240 machine guns to grenade launchers and M202 anti-tank rocket systems. In fact, “Time” magazine recognized TALON’s weaponized robot, SWORDS (Special Weapons Observation Reconnaissance Detection System) as one of the most aweinspiring inventions of 2004, with the warning, “Insurgents, be afraid.” Operators may stand up to 1000 meters away to operate the units, which cost amid $150,000 to $230,000 each.

RESILIENCE AND REPAIRS

With that kind of price tag, you may bet repairs and spare constituents are a huge issue. A typical, repairable robot will finish more than 1000 missions. In the Near East, sand and oil are as much foes to the machines as the bad guys are to US soldier, meriting the observation that one day’s work in Iraq for a robot is equivalent to a year’s worth stateside. Thus, elements salvage and quick repairs urge priority for Iraq’s Joint Robotic System Repair Station, which has seen robots return with little left but the tracks.

But they’re tough little droids. TALON, for instance, boasts that after the 2001 World Trade Center Attack, it is robotics units withstood 45 straight days of being decontaminated twice a day without the electronics failing. One TALON, the manufacturer claims, has been blown up three times but is back in combat with new arms, wiring and cameras.

Another, riding on the roof of a Humvee which was crossing a bridge over a river in Iraq, was blown off into the water. To the delight of it is handlers, it is heavily-damaged control unit was competent to direct the TALON to drive itself up out of the river and back to him. Now, that’s maximizing resources.

Does this mean that soldiers will become less indispensable or even obsolete as the robotics engineering science accelerates? Some think so, including Project Alpha, a U.S. Joint Forces Command analysis group, which predicts that by 2025, autonomous battlefield robots will be the rule, not the exception. But contrast that thinking to a recent incident reported in Stars and Stripes in which a group of engineers and armor soldiers of 1st Battalion, 13th Armor Regiment were patrolling near Camp Taji, Iraq.

They became distrustful of a hollowed-out log that turned out to incorporate artillery wires. As a wheeled robot went down to blow up the log while the soldiers stayed at a safe distance, an insurgent remotely detonated a second bomb nearby, and a third bomb was discovered. The pattern of the second and third bombs was designed to catch the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Soldiers as they investigated the first. The bad guy may have been smarter than the robot, but turned out to be not as smart as the soldiers who learned from the experience.

The lesson was unmistakable: Technology is great. But not just the engineering science has to keep up with the enemy, so do the humans. They’re not only the ones who invent, service, and utilise the machines: When bombs are the issue, people have to be right each time, because soldiers are irreplaceable to the ones who love them.

WHAT’S ON THE ROBOT HORIZON?

Many new robotic widgets are being produced for battlefield use. For instance, though the military presently uses unmanned surveillance airplanes operated by humans by remote control, DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is manufacturing something more sophisticated. Its $4-billion, five-year program aims to invent networked autonomous aircraft (J-UCAS) that may fly in particular spatial arrangements and distinguish targets on which to drop bombs. Such gadgets will be impervious to humane error constituents caused by such things as fatigue and G-force while flying coordinated missions at up to 700 kilometers per hour.

Honeywell not so long ago tested the MAV, or Micro Air Vehicle, a tiny (14-pound) DARPA project that operates by way of a ducted fan which has the engine and propeller inside a composite tube that serves as the flight surface. With a two-cylinder gasoline engine, it may “hover and stare” in ways that fixed-wing gadgets cannot, permitting it to deploy cameras and chemical sensors, flying up to 10,500 feet in altitude.

Army-funded researchers are fabricating an unmanned ambulance. The 3500-pound REV, or Robotic Extraction Vehicle, may drag wounded soldiers to safety and shelter them on two stretchers with life-support schemes underneath it is armored exterior as they prepare for evacuation. And Sandia National Laboratories has with great success tested an EDS (Explosive Destruction System) that internalizes explosions and holds the blast, vapor, and fragments; as well as treats and destroys biohazards such as anthrax.

For Sgt. First Class Sarver, improvements for EOD can’t come too soon. “People have walked on the moon and we’re still working with robots that have so much potential,” he says. His solution: let the present EOD robot-producing companies put their heads together to make a super-robot that has the speed of the TALON, the weight and frame of the ANDROS, the optics and configurations of the PackBot.

Then, says, Sarver, “you’d have a actually nice robot.”

Wolverine Bp202 Camera Laptop Backpack

WOLVERINE CLOTH CAMERA-LAPTOP COMBO BACKPACK Recognizing how Photographers travel and what they carry on these days, Wolverine is providing an magnificent combining of Photo/Laptop backpacks. The backpack is made of soft cloth material and has a distinguished laptop compartment that is nicely padded, and fits any 17″ laptop with ease. The camera compartment offers padded inserts that may fit multiple cameras, lenses, and more. One very delighting aspect of this bag is the weight. Some backpacks may add unnecessary poundage to your load. At 6 lbs it may be lifted with one finger. And the external dimensions – 10x14x20″ are well within carryon limits for all domestic and international airlines (max 45″ total).

Most helpful customer reviews

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful.
Amazing build quality, great size and very moderately priced for such a well built backpack.
By D. Adame
Let me preface this review by saying that if you buy this backpack you arent paying extra for a famous brand name or logo, you are paying for an extremely high quality backpack capable of carrying a lot of gear and also being used solely as an internal frame hiking backpack.

I was in the market for a photo backpack around $100 which could carry most of my camera gear and have room for other stuff such as a jacket or lunch. When I came across the Wolverine BP-202 I liked that it resembled the National Geographic/Adorama Safari Style bags but was more of a traditional backpack, and also a bit larger. The construction looked solid and resembled my internal frame hiking backpack.

I purchased it from Amazon.com for $109 shipped and when the box arrived I thought it was quite large for just a backpack. When I opened the box, the bag felt as if it had some weight to it which was nice compared to the LowePro Computrekker that I was previously looking at. The straps were the first thing to catch my attention because they were nicer than my hiking pack and the waist belt was of equal comfort and quality. I then noticed that the backpack actually has two aluminium inserts in the back to maintain rigidity and protect your laptop. The hip belt and aluminium inserts can all be removed if you want more of a traditional backpack with only the two straps.

The photo compartment definitely could hold everything I listed above and have some extra room leftover without anything being cramped. The inner compartments were all customizable foam with velcro and fairly deep. The entire padded compartment (including the sidewalls) could be removed to use the backpack as just a backpack.

There is a padded divider between the top and bottom compartments that could be removable allowing for maximum use of space. Most hiking bags this size would easily run in the $100-150 price range but themselves, then consider this has the ability to also be used as a photo/laptop backpack as well and its a bargain.

There is a hidden pocket in the bottom of the pack containing a rain cover which covers the entire pack. The two side pockets are great for small items that get lost and have mesh to hold drinks. Whoever thought about this bag thought about durability because this bag is tough. I would be extremely surprised if anything were to ever get damaged in this bag. With all the room, this bag can carry a lot of gear, but the problem with that is usually the weight becomes an issue. Luckily the way this bag is made, much like a hiking backpack, the weight distribution is great once you properly fit the bag to your body. Google “fitting a backpack” to see how to properly fit this to your body.

My 15.4 HP DV6000 laptop fits but getting it past the zipper is tight. In order to get your laptop in, you have to insert the entire top (or bottom) of your laptop in at one time and then rotate the rest in (like a folding knife) rather than just sliding it in like a CD. Once its in there is extra room though it doesn’t seem to slide around at all, and the padding is pretty intense.

In order to carry a tripod on this bag, there is a fold out flap/pocket that you insert your tripod legs and strap the top to the upper part of your bag. It actually works very well and supports my 7.lb Tripod easily. I use an old nylon strap to keep the top really snug to my pack because the included bungee is sort of small and thin.

Overall, I was far and away impressed by this bag because most of the stuff I was finding around the $100 price was either really small (tamrac adventure series/Nat Geographic)or low quality (lowepro Computrekker). This is a huge needle in the haystack of photo backpacks because if a different brand name were on it, the price would be a lit higher and more people might be using it. If anything happens to this bag, I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Likes about the bag:
Build quality, internal space, excellent protection, amazing price, not typical photo backpack, very comfortable, removable dividers and protective compartment.

Dislikes about the bag:
Slightly heavier than other bags, laptop opening could be larger. Waterproof would be excellent but that’s what the rain cover is for I guess.

Zareva
This is a great backpack for long distance traveling. I can fit in it my 5D with a 28-105mm lens on it, all my accessories, flash, more lenses and my 15.4″ MacBook Pro (this one barely goes in, anything bigger would be impossible to fit). After all the equipment is in, there is still a compartment left for a book, a light jacket and a sandwich. There are also designated slots for two water bottles and for a tripod. The amount of little pockets and compartments with zippers or without throughout the bag is countless. Technically, you can completely take out the vel cro parts on the bottom and the separator between the bottom and top compartments and use the bag as a giant hiking backpack.
Having said that (and having read the 6-feet tall guy review, which made me smile) this is a BIG backpack. I am 5’3″, 110 pounds, and if this bag is full to the max it could potentially flip me over (will include a picture for reference ), even empty this bag weighs a lot. Basically every time I look at it and think about a casual walk around town with my camera I think of how I should buy a smaller bag for everyday usage.
If you need to board planes, travel cross country or go hiking with all your equipment AND laptop, this is the perfect backpack for you.

Mertlich
When I strap on a photo back pack it’s usually for the day. That means food, water and other personal items and in most cases the backpacks out there just don’t have any room for all the goodies one needs for comfort ( I have 6 packs of different sizes and styles ). This pack finally can hold all my gear, 4 lens, flash, extension rings, filters, tripod, camera, and you get the idea it has pockets for everything I own and a lot of room in the upper compartment for items like food, water, etc. It’s made well out of water resistant canvas and has a hidden rain cover in the bottom pocket. It’s very comfortable and hangs well off the shoulders and is supported by a wide hip strap. I’m 6 feet tall and so far the 6 hours I’ve worn it have been a joy. Love this Pack.
